Professors for Bioinformatic Program include CORE faculty
and affiliated faculty. CORE faculty members include those
that actively engage in teaching, student advising, committee
work, qualifying exam and must be from Academia Sinica
or cooperating universities (Chiao Tung University, Tsing
Hua University, Yang Ming University). Those who are not
CORE members but are interested in (helping out) occasional
teaching or just be associated with are "affiliated faculty
member".
Currently, members of the admission committee (Wen-Lian
Hsu, Ting-Yi Sung, Ming-Jing Hwang, Grace Shwu-Rong Shieh,
Chun-Hou Chen, Jenn-Kang Hwang, Chuan-Yi Tang, P. C. Lyu)
are initial CORE members. Additional CORE members can be "recommended
by" existing CORE members and concurred by a majority of
them. CORE members can advise students, but an affiliated
members can only co-advise a student with a CORE member.
It is important to keep in mind that students need to publish
their papers in bioinformatics related journals and conferences
to graduate and part of that would be the responsibility
of their advisers. There will be a committee to decide
if the student has done adequate work before taking the
final defense.
Bioinformatics Academic Committee makes the rules about
required courses, qualifying exam, requirement for admission
to candidacy and the final defense exam. Currently members
include Wen-Lian Hsu, Ting-Yi Sung, Ming-Jing Hwang, Grace
Shwu-Rong Shieh, Chun-Hou Chen, Jenn-Kang Hwang, Chuan-Yi
Tang, P. C. Lu, Ueng-Cheng Yang and Kun-Mao Chao. Regardless
of which universities a student is initially assigned to,
his or her requirement for graduation should "only" follow
those rules set by the Bioinformatics Academic Committee,
not the rules of the individual university. Another important
thing is that a student is free to choose an advisor with
CORE members. If the Core member is not a joint faculty
member with the university the student registered in, then
a CORE faculty member of that university should agree to
act as a co-advisor (but does not share credit for papers
if no real collaboration exists).
